So... I just got furlough notice and it sucks. I've managed to stay on the "essential personnel" list so far (I'm a government contractor), but it looks like my number is up this week. Maybe now is the time to move back home to Michigan and get a regular, boring, engineering job (if there are any jobs to be had). I need to pay my bills and this government funding BS every year is really making it hard to do that. The shit thing is that even if I wanted to make use of my time off, I can't go anywhere cool because the government closed everything.

Somebody cheer me up. Please.

I'm in Michigan. I left Chrysler, partially because I was tired of the cyclical auto industry and the BS with contract negotiations every 4 years. Then I went to General Dynamics, which instead now has sequestration every year and contract every 5 years.

Once I get my arms back, think I'll be working for myself.

Sorry to hear that. A friend's dad was a government contractor, and he was always worried about his job. Good luck with everything (btw, are you in the DC area?).

He's not government, so that's not guaranteed. Besides, even if he does get paid eventually, bills need to be paid now.

He was shit out of luck anyway. Essential employees are still working but won't get paid until a budget or CR is signed.

Furloughed employees were really shit out of luck until the other day when the children signed a bill to pay them (when a budget or CR is signed) for being furloughed.

I feel your pain bro. I'm a government employee (essential peronnel). I must report to work, but I'm not getting paid. Also, all sick or vaca leave is cancelled until after they reopen.

I see you are at Ames. Mechanical, Aero or EE? I know of a certain Atlanta based airline that might be looking for folks. Fast paced engineering work and all the fun travel you can muster. Not much up right now, but keep an eye out.
